| Comparative Studies of Standard Sensory Assessment Methods with Operant Conditioning Paradigms | |||
| Comparisons between operant and reflex-based behavioral testing paradigms have shown that significantly different results can be obtained depending on outcome measure. Each strategy may have an important role in the assessment of nociceptive input and processing, but operant measures are particularly useful in assessing components of the pain experience that require cortical processing. Identification of how operant conditioning methods can be used to expand our understanding of the mechanisms underlying chronic pain and as pain management screening tools could enhance the pain research infrastructure. This area of research has been largely underrepresented in the field but is of increasing interest. Dr. Yezierski will present data demonstrating that stress produces hyporeflexia in reflex-based outcomes, but hyperalgesia in operant paradigms. Dr. Schrott will provide a similar comparison of studies of rodents pre-natally exposed to opioids that are tested as adults in either the conditioned place preference test or thermal sensory assessment. Dr. Martin will compare and contrast opioid and non-opioid analgesics with respect to their ability to reverse nerve-injury induced hypersensitivity and maintain self-administration or alter opioid self-administration in rats with neuropathic pain. Dr. Fairbanks will summarize of the current state of knowledge surrounding self-administration studies in rodents with chronic pain. | |||
