| The Mayday Pain and Society Fellowship Experience: A Media and Policy Initiative | |||
| The Mayday Pain & Society Fellowship: A Media and Policy Initiative is a program designed to train physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, scientists, and legal scholars in the pain management community to go beyond their own professional pursuits to become leaders and advocates for change in the management of pain in the United States and in Canada. Each chosen fellow works closely with a communications firm for five months to develop a communications strategic plan based on specific goals. Carol Schadelbauer, Vice President at Burness Communications, who manages the Mayday Fellowship will moderate. Susan Dentzer, Health Correspondent for PBS’s NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, will discuss and demonstrate what makes a good interview and how to work well with the media. Two past fellows will present their experiences. Patrick Coyne, R.N., Clinical Nurse Specialist and Clinical Director of the Thomas Palliative Care Unit at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals/Virginia Commonwealth Health Systems, will discuss his success with moving legislation in Virginia using communications strategies and techniques learned during the fellowship. Lonnie Zeltzer, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Director of the Pediatric Pain Program, UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital at the David Geffen School will discuss the skills she learned to become a media resource. Time will be allotted for audience discussion and debate. | |||
