Past and Current State of Multidisciplinary Treatment Programs
This symposium will examine the current state of multidisciplinary pain center (MPCs) treatment programs as organized by the American Pain Society Special Interest Group (SIG), Pain Rehabilitation SIG. Dr Stanos willl focus briefly on the historical development of MPCs and current state within the realm of chronic pain treatment. Dr. Dennis Turk will review issues related to cost- effectiveness of MPCs as compared to interventional pain treatment and surgical interventions. Dr. James Robinson will review and examine outcome research of MPCs. Potential strategies for more successful selection of patients and subsequent improved outcomes will also be proposed including moving from "medically based" interventions to a more "ecologically based" focus that incorporates a collaboration between treatment centers, patients, and employers. Dr. Jeff Livovich, will discuss the insurance providers perspective focusing on the growing costs of chronic pain management and potential for controlling costs, improving care and efficiency. Dr. Edward Covington will discuss the future of MPC treatment.
