| Ethnicity and Pain: Where Policy, Cultures and Science Intersect | |||
| Despite increased emphasis on inclusion of minorities and underserved populations in research, limited information is available regarding factors that contribute to ethnic differences in pain responses. This symposium addresses social and ethical issues regarding pain treatment in ethnically diverse populations, and research findings regarding ethnicity, genetics and pain will be presented. Dr. Wilson will discuss race-based medicine and pharmacogenomics related to improving pain research and treatment for minorities and underserved. Mr. Bonham will explore the social, legal and ethical implications of race, ethnicity and genomics in the context of pain, including how such factors influence ethnic disparities. How should researchers operationalize and communicate the concepts of race, ethnicity and ancestry as research variables in studying genomic influences to pain? What are the implications for individuals and society of uncovering genomic contributions to pain? Dr. Hastie will present recent findings from experimental and clinical settings that study psychosocial, psychophysical and genetic factors which influence pain and medication side effects. She will address how limited understanding of the inter-relationships of these factors might fuel misconceptions about non-compliance, decreased analgesic efficacy or increased side effects. Understanding genetic and non-genetic factors will be key to increasing insight for improved pain treatment across ethnic groups. | |||
