| Assessing and Treating Pain in People with Advanced Dementia | |||
| This symposium will present empirically-based approaches to overcoming the challenges of assessing and treating pain in people with dementia. The symposium will begin with a brief overview of the major issues confronting clinicians and researchers, including reliability of pain self-report in people with dementia, alternative approaches to identifying pain, and the necessity of using empirical analgesic trials to treat presumed pain. Dr. Decker will discuss the psychometrics of the Pain Assessment Tool in Cognitively Impaired Elders, which measures pain-related behaviors. She will also present findings from a study that examines pain management practices for African-American and Caucasian nursing home residents with dementia. Dr. Chibnall will report the findings from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of daily acetaminophen vs. placebo in 25 nursing home residents with moderate-to-severe dementia. Outcome measures included behavior, emotional well-being, and use of as-needed psychotropic medications. Dr. Snow will discuss a feasibility trial of the Cooperative Pain Assessment Intervention (CPAIN). CPAIN is a behaviorally-based performance management framework aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of nursing assistants in reporting pain behaviors observed in nursing home residents with severe dementia linked with increasing follow-up pain assessment and treatment by licensed nursing staff. | |||
