| Acceptance, Mindfulness, Values, and Cognition in a Contextual Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to Chronic Pain | |||
| There are developments within clinical psychology toward an increasingly functional and contextual view of human behavior and suffering. These developments are linked with a basic behavioral theory of cognition and emotion, and with increasing laboratory and clinical data. Associated therapy approaches are referred to as “third wave” to denote their place as an extension of the operant and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Two basic tenants from these approaches are that psychological experiences are best understood in a context of the relevant situation and the individual’s history, and to attempt to eliminate undesirable experiences that are historically rooted can be counterproductive. In this symposium researchers will discuss recent results within pain management that are connected with these broader developments. Dr. McCracken will present findings on combined relations of acceptance, values, and mindfulness, together referred to as psychological flexibility, for patients with chronic pain. Dr. Vowles will consider how thinking leads to suffering, and will focus on novel ways of conceptualising the role of catastrophizing. Dr. Dinoff will present data from a primarily male veteran population, demonstrating generality with data from other settings, and discuss the role of co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder with chronic pain. Professor Haythornthwaite will moderate a discussion with the audience. | |||
