Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Programs: Developing U.S. Models of Clinical Service and Education
In the United States more than 6,500 children die annually from life-limiting diseases, the majority suffering from pain and other distressing symptoms. Providing state-of-the-art symptom control is paramount for healthcare professionals working with children with life-threatening illnesses; however, few programs exist nationally for delivery of this type of care. This symposium will highlight three national models for Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care, each unique by institution and community served. After providing an introduction to pediatric palliative care, Dr. Friedrichsdorf will introduce the Pain and Palliative Care Program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota as one model for multidisciplinary inpatient, home and hospice care for children in acute and chronic pain and for children with life-limiting conditions. Dr. Vesel will introduce the Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT), an interdisciplinary consult team at Children’s Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. PACT facilitates development of overall goals of care, intensive symptom management, care coordination for children with life-threatening illnesses, and provides family bereavement support. Dr. Evan will describe UCLA’s Children’s Comfort Care Resource Program, an education program designed to train staff in practicing pediatric palliative care. Speakers will then answer audience questions regarding implementation of palliative care principles into clinical programs.
