The Therapeutic Potential of Cannabis and Cannabinoids
No new class of analgesics has been developed for over 50 years. All the new, improved medications work on already understood mechanisms. The cannabinoids represent a potential breakthrough in this field with much-anticipated new scientific information available. This session will explore the new developments relating to cannabinoid receptors and pharmacology and describe recent clinical trials involving cannabis and cannabinoid drugs. The symposium will be broken into three parts. Dr. Mackie will provide an overview of cannabinoid receptor system and describe cannabinoids’ mechanisms of action in analgesia, including non-receptor mechanisms and potential new receptor targets. Interactions of cannabinoids with other receptor systems will be explored. He will also present preclinical evidence of analgesia, including cannabidiol-specific effects. Dr. Ratcliffe will present the results of current clinical trials involving analgesic cannabinoid pharmaceutical products. Dr. Atkinson will describe the experience of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR), which has funded numerous controlled studies involving herbal cannabis.
