| The Battlefield and Beyond: Pain Among Returning OIF and OEF Soldiers | |||
| More than 18,000 soldiers deployed in Operation Iraq Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) have been wounded in combat, and about 46% of these casualties have been medically evacuated. Pain is an almost universal component of these severely combat-injured, and also is present in a high proportion of returning service members who completed their deployment. This symposium will summarize recent initiatives to improve the identification and treatment of pain problems across the continuum of care. Lt. Colonel Buckenmaier will present data on the nature of wounds and pain issues among combat-wounded soldiers evacuated to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for treatment, and will describe the implementation of several pain management technologies to better control pain during stabilization, transport, and early medical care. Dr. Walker will summarize pain issues among soldiers with multiple traumas treated at one of the four VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers, and will describe evolving treatment approaches and outcomes. Mac Gallagher will discuss how challenges in caring for soldiers’ pain, from initial trauma to functional restoration, reflect a phenomenological model of pain as a disease. He will describe how using the naturalistic experiment of early intervention with regional anesthesia can test this model longitudinally. The symposium will conclude with an open question and answer period. | |||
