Instructions for Online Abstract Submission

This is an electronic submittal system and does not require the submission of any hard copies or disks. The system is compatible with PCs and Macintosh computers. The system does require Internet access. Authors who do not have Internet access should contact APS at 847/375-4715.

Important Information about Submission and Issues Related to Copyright

Paper/Poster abstracts previously presented or published may not be submitted to APS without modification. Data must be updated or expanded, resulting in a new abstract, unless this is the submission of a poster presented at the 2006 Society for Neuroscience meeting.

The primary author will be asked to sign a statement within the submission forms which confirms that the primary author agrees to grant unrestricted, irrevocable permission to publish the abstract in printed material and in an online searchable database.

APS recognizes that on occasion, an author may submit an abstract to APS and simultaneously submit the same abstract to another organization for possible presentation at another group’s meeting. When an abstract is submitted to APS, it is expected that the primary author fully intends to present original data at APS if the abstract is accepted for inclusion in the APS proceedings. In order to avoid a conflict of interest on the part of the authors, and to avoid copyright infringement, abstracts accepted by APS should not be presented prior to the APS meeting. It is the responsibility of the primary author to ensure that the accepted abstract is not presented elsewhere. If APS learns that an accepted abstract has been presented elsewhere prior to the APS meeting, the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee will withdraw the abstract from the APS meeting and if time permits, from the supplement to the Journal of Pain. If an abstract presented at the APS meeting is to be presented elsewhere after the APS meeting, the primary author must contact the permissions department at the publisher of the Journal of Pain to obtain permission to reproduce the abstract. APS also encourages the primary author to contact the organization involved in regard to its policy relating to previously presented abstracts.

General Information

  • Abstracts are limited to 300 words and images are NOT allowed.
  • Authors should not denote specific categories such as "Introduction," "Methods," and "Conclusion" (etc.) in the body of the abstract. The abstract should appear in one fluid paragraph.
  • If you must cite a reference, please do so at the end of your abstract using the following format: author name, publication name, and year of publication, e.g., (Smith, J Pain, 2002).
  • All accepted abstracts will be published in The Journal of Pain, the official journal of the American Pain Society, which is copyrighted by the American Pain Society. The journal supplement will be distributed to program attendees at the annual scientific meeting. Please check your submission carefully before clicking the "Submit to Program Officials" button in the submission system. APS will not allow any changes to the abstract once the submittal system closes on October 27, 2006. Abstracts will be printed in the The Journal of Pain as they appear at the time of submission.

Meeting Registration Guidelines for Presenters

Paper abstracts will be presented during concurrent session time blocks throughout the annual scientific meeting. Posters will be presented on either Thursday, May 3 OR Friday, May 4, 2007. Presentation times will be assigned at the time the abstract is accepted; authors cannot request a specific presentation date/time. Prior to submission of a paper or poster, at least one author must agree to attend the APS meeting and to participate as the paper or poster presenter.

APS will not waive the registration fee for presenters. Presenters are responsible for all personal expenses (e.g., travel, hotel) for the day they present and for conference registration fees. Presenters must register for at least the day they present. Presenters are encouraged to register for the meeting and to reserve hotel accommodations as early as possible to ensure that space is available.

Policy on Commercial Support

Presentations must avoid commercialism and should conform to accreditation standards for commercial support. Presentations that constitute promotion and advertising will not be accepted, including pervasive or inappropriate use of logos. No company product information may be displayed or disseminated in conjunction with the presentation. If the author(s) received any funding for this research, a clear acknowledgment of support should be included in the abstract, e.g., Supported by a grant from ABC Pharmaceuticals.

APS 2007 Paper/Poster Themes

It is essential that each author select a theme (topic) for the abstract being submitted. This information is used for the appropriate grouping of papers and posters at the annual meeting as well as for indexing purposes and publication in The Journal of Pain.

Selection Criteria

Paper and poster submissions will be reviewed and rated by members of the Scientific Program Committee who have expertise in the research or clinical area to which the submission belongs. Each submission will be reviewed for its scientific or clinical importance, ethical practice, and study design.
