General Information

The APS Scientific Program Committee invites you to submit abstracts for papers and posters to be presented at the 25th Annual Meeting of the American Pain Society. Abstracts are limited to 300 words and images are NOT allowed. Authors should not denote specific categories such as "Introduction," "Methods," and "Conclusion" (etc.) in the body of the abstract. The abstract should appear in one fluid paragraph. If you must cite a reference, please do so at the end of your abstract using the following format: author name, publication name, and year of publication, e.g., (Smith, J Pain, 2002).

Paper/Poster Abstracts previously presented or published may not be submitted to APS without modification. Original work must be changed or expanded, resulting in a new abstract, unless this is the submission of a poster presented at the 2005 Society for Neuroscience meeting.

The Scientific Program Committee recognizes that submissions of high quality, accepted for presentation at its annual meeting, should be acknowledged. All accepted abstracts will be published in The Journal of Pain, the official journal of the American Pain Society, which is copyrighted by the American Pain Society. The journal supplement will be distributed to program attendees at the annual scientific meeting. Please check your submission carefully before clicking the "Submit to Program Officials" button in the submission system. Your abstract will be printed in the journal supplement as it appears at the time of submission.

Meeting Registration Guidelines for Presenters: Paper abstracts will be presented during concurrent session time blocks throughout the annual scientific meeting. Posters will be presented on either Thursday, May 4 OR Friday, May 5, 2006. Presentation times will be assigned at the time that the abstract is accepted; authors cannot request a specific presentation date/time. Prior to submission of a paper or poster, at least one author must agree to attend the APS meeting and to participate as the paper or poster presenter. APS will not waive the registration fee for presenters. Presenters are responsible for all personal expenses (e.g., travel, hotel) for the day they present and for conference registration fees. Presenters must register for at least the day they present. Presenters are encouraged to register for the meeting and to reserve hotel accommodations as early as possible to ensure that space is available.

Policy on Commercial Support: Presentations must avoid commercialism and should conform to the APS Standards on Commercial Support. Presentations that constitute promotion and advertising will not be accepted including pervasive or inappropriate use of logos. If the cost of a presentation has been underwritten to any extent, a clear acknowledgement stating the support and identifying the source should be included in the abstract (e.g., “The support of [corporation or institution] for this project is gratefully acknowledged.”). Statements made in presentations are the sole responsibility of the author or presenter. Statements should not be viewed as or considered representative of any formal stance or position taken on any subject, issue, or product by the American Pain Society.

APS 2006 Paper/Poster Themes:

It is essential that each author select a theme (topic) for the abstract being submitted. This information is used for the appropriate grouping of papers and posters at the annual meeting as well as for indexing purposes and publication in The Journal of Pain.

Selection Criteria:

Paper and poster submissions will be reviewed and rated by members of the Scientific Program Committee who have expertise in the research or clinical area to which the submission belongs. Each submission will be reviewed for its scientific or clinical importance, ethical practice, and study design.

Society for Neuroscience Poster Submission Instructions

The American Pain Society invites all primary authors of posters accepted for presentation at the 2005 Society for Neuroscience meeting to present their work at the APS Annual Scientific Meeting in San Antonio in 2006. This invitation does not apply to paper presentations; all paper submissions to the APS meeting must discuss new, unpublished data.

Authors presenting Society for Neuroscience posters will be required to pay their own expenses associated with attending the APS Scientific Meeting, including registration fees, travel, and hotel expenses. Society for Neuroscience poster presenters are not eligible to apply for APS Young Investigator Travel Awards unless they also submit a new abstract to APS, different from their SFN abstract.

Submission Guidelines:

Society for Neuroscience posters will be incorporated into the general APS poster displays within the poster hall and organized according to the theme/category selected at the time of submission. They will not be displayed in a separate section of the poster hall, as was the case at the 2005 meeting in Boston.

Society for Neuroscience abstracts accepted for presentation at the APS meeting will not be published in the abstract supplement to the Journal of Pain, but the journal will include an author index of those named on Society for Neuroscience abstracts.

Primary (presenting) authors will be notified of their abstract’s status in early January of 2006.

Proceed to the link to the submission forms (below) to submit your SFN abstract to APS.
