General Information

The American Pain Society Scientific Program Committee invites the submission of proposals for papers and posters to be presented at the 24th Annual Scientific Meeting of the APS, March 30 - April 2, 2005, in Boston, MA.

Important Dates


The submittal system will remain open from September 8, 2004 to November 1, 2004. The system will close at 11:59 pm Pacific Time on November 1, 2004, and additional submissions will not be accepted.


Applicants will be notified in December, 2004 regarding selection of their proposals.

Instructions for Online Abstract Submission

This is an electronic submittal system and does not require the submission of any hard copies or disks. The system is compatible with PCs and Macintosh computers. The system does require Internet access. Authors who do not have Internet access should contact APS at 847/375-4715.

General Information

The APS Scientific Program Committee invites you to submit abstracts for papers and posters to be presented at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Pain Society. Abstracts are limited to 300 words and images are NOT allowed. Authors should not denote specific categories such as "Introduction," "Methods," and "Conclusion" (etc.) in the body of the abstract. The abstract should appear in one fluid paragraph. If you must cite a reference, please do so at the end of your abstract using the following format: author name, publication name, and year of publication, e.g., (Smith, J Pain, 2002).

Paper/Poster Abstracts previously presented or published may not be submitted to APS without modification. Original work must be changed or expanded, resulting in a new abstract.

The Scientific Program Committee recognizes that submissions of high quality, accepted for presentation at its annual meeting, should be acknowledged.  All accepted abstracts will be published in The Journal of Pain, the official journal of the American Pain Society.The American Pain Society will retain the copyright of published abstracts.The journal supplement will be distributed to program attendees at the annual scientific meeting. Please check your submission carefully before clicking the "Submit to Program Officials" button in the submission system. Your abstract will be printed in the journal supplement as it appears at the time of submission.

Meeting Registration Guidelines for Presenters: Paper abstracts will be presented during concurrent session time blocks throughout the annual scientific meeting. Posters will be presented on either Thursday, March 31, 2005 OR Friday, April 1, 2005. Presentation times will be assigned at the time that the abstract is accepted; authors cannot request a specific presentation date/time. Prior to submission of a paper or poster, at least one author must agree to attend the APS meeting and to participate as the paper or poster presenter. APS will not waive the registration fee for presenters. Presenters are responsible for all personal expenses (e.g., travel, hotel) for the day they present and for conference registration fees. Presenters must register for at least the day they present. Presenters are encouraged to register for the meeting and to reserve hotel accommodations as early as possible to ensure that space is available.

Policy on Commercial Support: Presentations must avoid commercialism and should conform to the APS Standards on Commercial Support. Presentations that constitute promotion and advertising will not be accepted including pervasive or inappropriate use of logos. If the cost of a presentation has been underwritten to any extent, a clear acknowledgement stating the support and identifying the source should be included in the abstract (e.g., “The support of [corporation or institution] for this project is gratefully acknowledged.”). Statements made in presentations are the sole responsibility of the author or presenter. Statements should not be viewed as or considered representative of any formal stance or position taken on any subject, issue, or product by the American Pain Society.

APS 2005 Paper/Poster Themes:

It is essential that each author select a theme (topic) for the abstract being submitted. This information is used for the appropriate grouping of papers and posters at the annual meeting as well as for indexing purposes and publication in The Journal of Pain.

Selection Criteria:

Paper and poster submissions will be reviewed and rated by members of the Scientific Program Committee who have expertise in the research or clinical area to which the submission belongs. Each submission will be reviewed for its scientific or clinical importance, ethical practice, and study design.

Notification of Acceptance or Rejection of Submissions


First authors on paper submissions will be notified in December of 2004 (by mail) of their abstract’s acceptance or rejection. First authors will be required to complete a presenter information form and faculty disclosure form. The list of accepted papers is now available on the APS web site. This list is organized alphabetically by the first author’s last name.


First authors on poster submissions will be notified in December of 2004 (by mail) of their abstract’s acceptance or rejection. A listing of accepted poster abstracts is now posted on the APS web site. This list is organized alphabetically by the first author’s last name. The APS web site also provides authors with a set of guidelines for poster presentation, as well as information about poster set up and tear down times. The guidelines document was mailed, along with confirmation letters, to all accepted poster presenters on 12/15.
